Volvo could have called this the ES30. It would have made sense to anyone who remembers the classic P1800ES coupe. The new car shares the old-timer’s concept of a four-seat body and glass rear hatch. But the marketing people say they didn’t want to give it a name that might pigeonhole it and thereby restrict the buyer base to those in search of a coupe. It’s also chasing buyers of a market segment that’s currently white-hot in Europe and will likely begin gaining traction worldwide: premium compact hatchbacks.
